One of the turquoise glass cabochons has a small chip. There is variation in the color of these glass cabochons. One of the sliver drops has a depression. The snake bracelet had a gold gilt at one time, but now that has almost all gone. It has the assay mark on the back of the head and the three part Egyptian hallmark on the inside of the twisted cable body. These are classic bracelets that are never out of fashion and a real collector's item. The hallmark identifies the bracelet as made in Cairo in the years 1948-49. These silver and niello bracelets most likely come from a city in Greece called Xanthi, while it was under Bulgarian rule in the early 1900s. Xanthi, is a city in Thrace, Greece which fell under the Ottoman empire in the 14th Century. The Ottomans introduced a lot of people from Central Asia to this city which explains the niello work. The two bracelets are matching but not exactly the same size. One is slightly bigger than the other. The bracelets have three settings, so they are adjustable according to the wearer's wrist size. These were worn high up on the arms by Nubian women and used in the spiritual dance known as the zar ceremony, a dancing, singing ritual to appease spirits. The pair is made of lower grade silver and have lots of bell dangles, perfect for bellydance. The body of the armlet has hand engravings in the shapes of stylized eyes to ward off the evil eye. Vintage Algerian Kabyle Bracelet

An intriguing find, this flared bracelet was most likely made in Algeria. Probably in the early decades of the Twentieth Century at the height of French colonial rule in North Africa. The cuff is made with definite nods to the Kabyle jewelry of the Ouled Nail. There are echoes of this particular tribe's defensive bracelets which have the characteristic square-ish studs. This bracelet however, was not made for the Ouled Nail women, rather embellished by local silversmiths to cater for French taste. Made of silver and decorated with chasing details even on the studs. The bracelet's center is decorated with a small coral cabochon. Note: small part of the border needs to be resoldered. Made, as a lot of zar jewelry is, from 600 silver and fully hallmarked with the three part Egyptian hallmark identifying the purity of silver (60%) and the date (1953-1959) and carrying the Lotus Hallmark. The top part of the earring is decorated with roping and with a coral colored bead. These earrings were used in the zar ceremony, a ceremony to appease spirits which have taken hold of the body.
